History Lesson 3-Brigham Young University San Clemente.
What does my Alma Matter have anything to do with San Clemente?
The Marblehead bluff where the now Outlets and Sea Summit homes sit use to be home to Reeves ranch. The Reeves family were early pioneers of San Clemente. They owned a rubber shop, San Clemente Dairy and the furniture store all in the Industrial area. In the 1960’s they gave the land, over 1150 acres, to the LDS Church. As Fred Swegles wrote in the SC Times…”In 1968 the Mormon church had a plan which included 3 lakes, condomania, including over 5,000 dwellings, and of course a sprawling college campus.” The project clearly didn’t come to fruition. The church eventually sold the land. It was going to be home to the Nixon Library but they decided instead on Yorba Linda. Rumors than shifted to a Ritz Carlton. After passing hands through multiple developers it was finally developed by Craig Realty Group. Now we have outlets with ocean views that feel way out of place…at least we finally got a movie theatre.
